MIT programs can help!

Does MIT offer rigorous, project-based STEM courses for K-12 students?
MIT offers many excellent programs for students wanting to pursue STEM, such as the Beaver Works programs which are rigorous and free.  Find our more (below) and see if its right for your students.
How can I get kids ready and excited to pursue STEM?

Teach with Maker projects in any subject, and help your students see the opportunities, creativity, and satisfaction they can have in STEM classes and careers.  Find out (below) how you can create and lead Maker projects in any classroom.

​Beaver Works Summer Institute (BWSI) is a transformational STEM experience, using project-based, workshop-style curricula. We have courses for rising high school seniors, and middle school programs for grades 7 and 8.  These programs are funded by sponsors including MIT and the Lincoln Laboratory - there is no cost for students to participate in these programs.
High School juniors: Imagine working on projects where you create applications that understand your voice, create a flu forecast by modeling disease propagation, read hand gestures, or look for cyberbullying in tweets; these are actual projects BWSI teams have built.  Our students work hard at learning and innovating with coding, AI / machine learning, and data science.

More interested in things that drive, fly, and swim, on their own?  We’ve got courses where you create autonomous model racecars, UAV’s, marine drones, or mini-satellites.  Get experience with design, prototyping, and coding, while learning  how to work as a team with your peers from across the US.

Air, land, sea, space, cyber, and most importantly human projects are all available in BWSI.  So pick a project and challenge yourself to be transformed at BWSI!

Middle Schools: We will be running weekend programs for grades 7 and 8 during the upcoming school year and at MIT during BWSI in 2021.  Our courses focus on introductory programming with creating an autonomous racecars and engineering with a purpose in Designing for Assistive Technology.

For teachers and other non-profit organizations, we will share our curriculum that can be used to help students prepare for college and beyond.  We will help others create similar programs and are working to build a network of schools that will collectively improve engineering education worldwide.  For information on Beaver Works Summer Institute please email bwsi-admin@mit.edu.

Maker projects in the lower grades give students the skills and familiarity with current technologies, and reduces barriers to them continuing on a STEM path.

At the MIT Edgerton Center K-12 MakerLab, we believe Making is a practice every teacher can use to empower students in any subject. Our team consists of experienced classroom teachers and master Makers who know first-hand how Making can succeed in traditional school environments.

Build your skills with our teacher PD:

Maker skills workshops -Teachers spend a day learning a new Maker technology and exploring how it can be used in the classroom. All materials provided, and beginners are welcome.
We offer workshops on 3D printing, Laser/Vinyl cutting, Electronics, Arduino, Micro:bit, Maker projecct design, and more! 


Master Making in the Classroom is a professional development opportunity for educators seeking to integrate Maker tools and habits into any K-12 classroom, for any academic content area.  Teachers and Makerspace leaders get 12 weeks of coaching on our teacher-tested process and project design tools, and leave with the skills they need to be confident, inspired, and ready to lead Maker projects.
