Literary Mapping With Ozobots

Grade 5 is reading Esperanza Rising by Pam Munoz Ryan. This book is part of the new ELA curriculum which introduces the students to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the immigration of migrant farmworkers from Mexico to Southern California in the 1930s. In small groups, students programmed their Ozobot Bit to complete the journey taken in the story. The Ozobots were programmed to trace the route that Esperanza and her mother used to escape Mexico during this turbulent time in their lives. Students were given a poster-size map, from our large format printer, of Mexico and California. First, they identified, located, and labeled the 6 stops of the journey. Then, students used red, blue, black and green markers to pinpoint each location to create a route for the Ozobot to travel on.
